**** MY REVIEW – FOUR STARS ****
A Stewed Observation by— Karen C. Whelen
Jane Marsh, her boyfriend Dale, plus two other couples, all over fifty and members of The Gourmet Dinner Club, have traveled to Ireland to visit one of the members’ relatives and see lots of sights along the way. They stay at a castle which has been converted to a hotel, and right from the start, our heroine locks eyes with the handsome castle owner, Griffin O’Doherty. (How could she! Isn’t she hoping for a marriage proposal from her boyfriend? Well, Dale does seem a bit distracted by texts and phone calls home from an ex-girlfriend back home.)
But hey, this is a murder mystery. Not long after they arrive Griffin’s elderly uncle becomes unexplainedly violent and has to be restrained. All the men jump into the fray, leaving the old gent dead at the end. But who actually killed him? Was it intentional or purely an accident?
Against the wishes of her boyfriend and the other Dinner Club members, Jane dons her sleuthing cap. But this mystery is a hard one to crack. The list of suspects with motive to kill the old man is long, and searching out clues goes first this way and that for Jane. She perseveres, dodging threats, police accusations, boyfriend troubles, and the Irish Laddie’s advances.
Just WHO did this dastardly deed? The ending packs punch, so muddle through all the clues, herrings, and confusion to discover it.
Readers will get a taste of Ireland, literal and figurative. Sometimes these excursions and bar hopping don’t seem a part of the mystery, but they certainly add color.
A good read, but I gave A Stewed Observation (i. e. Astute Observation) FOUR STARS because I felt it could have been written tighter, with less back-tracking and repeated dialogue.
Full Disclosure – I received a digital ARC of this book for review from the publisher
