When his girlfriend dumps him and a dealer nearly rams him off a bridge, Al DeSantis quits the New Haven Police Department. Just as he plans to head for LA, he finds out the father who left when he was a kid has deeded him the Blue Palmetto Detective Agency in Georgia.
Al goes down to Savannah intending to sell fast and go west, but before he can, he discovers a strong, attractive detective named Maxine, a dead body on the dock—and his father, alive, suffering from dementia, and determined to help his “new partner Al” solve the crime. Al has a lot of adjusting to do when his traditional ideas are challenged as he has to act as his father’s caretaker, and finds that Maxine is his superior in the agency that he “owns.” When his father goes missing, Al and Max must team up to save his father–and capture the murderer.

MY REVIEW – 4 1/2 Stars*
Al DeSantis and Al DeSantis Jr. are quite a pair in Ang Pompano’s not-quite cozy WHEN IT’S TIME FOR LEAVING mystery novel. One has dementia and the other has a serious phobia of bridges. And yet these oil and water characters mix quite nicely – now and then – to solve an old murder. And a recent one too.
Al DeSantis Jr. quit the New Haven Police Department after a horrendous incident on a bridge (remember his phobia?) and was heading to Los Angeles when news about a father he thought was long dead and the Blue Palmetto Detective Agency, which he’d never heard of but now owned, beckons him south. Determined to clear up the obvious mistake, he decides to make a little detour to Savannah on his westward journey.
But confronting a father who fades in and out of reality, finding a body on his first day, and sniffing the foul odor of a cold case rising from the swampy past, all act like glue to his shoes and he determines to stick around… for a while. The beautiful gal next door and a feisty matron as office manager seal the deal.
Pompano’s flawed detective is fun to watch. He’s tough with the bad guys, but when dealing with his father and the gal next store, he’s totally lost. There are moments of humor; others of sadness. And the growing tension in the last third of the book leads to a climax that will make some readers cringe.
Pompano’s descriptions of Savannah are spot on. But…. as far as “explicit language,” there are plenty that might offend the usual cozy reader – even with the author’s assurance that the F— words will be taken out before printing. Other expletives are still there. So read this fast-paced, complicated, enjoyable mystery…with caution.
