Welsh Canadian globetrotting sleuth, and professor of criminal psychology, Cait Morgan, is supposed to be “celebrating” her fiftieth birthday in Jamaica with her ex-cop husband Bud Anderson. But when the body of the luxury estate’s owner is discovered locked inside an inaccessible tower, Cait and her fellow guests must work out who might have killed him – even if his murder seems impossible. Could the death of the man who hosted parties in the 1960s attended by Ian Fleming and Noël Coward be somehow linked to treasure the legendary Captain Henry Morgan might have buried at the estate? Or to the mission Bud and his secret service colleagues have been sent to the island to undertake?

PRAISE FOR THE CAIT MORGAN MYSTERIES

“…touches of Christie or Marsh but with a bouquet of Kinsey Millhone.” —The Globe and Mail

“A sparkling, well-plotted, and quite devious mystery…” —The Hamilton Spectator

“…a sympathetic amateur detective, a locked-room mystery, a small cast of colourful suspects, loving descriptions of food and drink, and a few red herrings thrown our way…with a nod to a fresh literary or filmic artifice in each novel in the series…” – Crime Fiction Lover

MY REVIEW  – Four Stars

The Corpse With the Crystal Skull is both a mystery and a spy thriller. There are buried treasures and secret passageways. There is a locked room murder-mystery, with the victim inside a tower where no one could possibly have gotten in or out to do the deed. The historical fingers of this convoluted tale reach back both to the 1600s, more recently to the closed room secret meetings of World War Two, and to a posh resort on modern day Jamaica.

If you think the setting for this book is far reaching, wait till you try to solve the murder(s), find the treasure, and discover just WHO is the villain.  You will have fun deciphering all the misinformation and withheld information that makes up the bulk of Cathy Ace’s book (written during the Covid-19 Quarantine months, which says a lot!) The various nods to Ian Fleming and his James Bond books will delight fans of that genre.

Three couples are “vacationing” on the northern, less populated side of Jamaica. The men have an agenda that readers will not fully know until the last chapter. The two wives play helpful roles trying to aid their spouses in what they have only an inkling of understanding about what’s going on. The young mistress is a question mark in the scenario.

Seriously, if you can unravel the tangle of lies, betrayals, government secrets, missing papers and, well, what the crystal skull has to do with it all, before the clever Poirot-like denouement by the protagonist (who has seemed to be the most confused all along), you are a better chair-side detective than I am!  Oh, and that locked room murder solution?  Ve-r-r-y clever indeed!
