A shooting on the savannah. A tragedy she’d rather forget. When past and present collide, will she survive to see her future?
Kenya, 2016. Semi-retired vet Rose Hardie just wants to enjoy her golden years and care for her disabled husband. But her peace of mind shatters when a forgotten confidant returns and reopens a case where Rose pulled the trigger. With her memories of the poacher’s shocking death flooding back, she barely catches her breath before her childhood friend is brutally murdered.
Braving blackmail and entrenched corruption, the tireless woman dives headfirst into helping the victim’s son solve the crime. But when the lead suspect is killed, Rose’s plans for a peaceful life end up dead and buried…
As her own traumatic history unravels, can Rose catch a killer before she becomes the next victim?

MY REVIEW
I loved Victoria Tait’s “Fowl Murder” (and the prequel, “Grevy Danger” a free novella on her website). The story is set in Kenya, and her protagonist is an older woman, Mama Rose, who is half animal doctor and half reluctant detective.
When a friend from her younger days, whom Mama Rose has drifted away from, suddenly returns to town, and hints at digging up an old murder case, Mama Rose is uneasy. Her friend had “covered” for her in a long ago accidental shooting, but now the authorities want to revisit it. Who is stirring up trouble? Who wants pay back? And what danger is there to Mama Rose?
Then when her friend is murdered and the authorities want it “pushed under the rug” and declared an accidental death, Mama Rose and her friend’s son, Thabiti must investigate, no matter the cost. (Thabiti is a very likable character that you will want to root for. He is so shy around new people, he can only have a conversation if he wears a disguise. Will this get them into trouble?)
As a lover of all things Africa, I enjoyed the well drawn setting, the local words and ways of doing things. (Native terms are linked to descriptions in the Kindle version so you never have to guess.) Several side stories come together in the end for a surprise, but satisfying ending.
