They chase a light and then it chases them.

When a mysterious light entices twelve-year-old Davy and his bothersome cousin, Anderson, into the woods, they discover the forest is alive with wonder. Firefly magic dazzles the boys, and they vow to save the insects from destruction.

Then a fire rages in the forest. Despite the cousins’ creative efforts to help the firefighters, the situation for the fireflies plummets from grim to dire. As the blaze consumes the fireflies’ habitat, the young warriors despair.

They enlist the support of the neighboring farms to protect and save the habitat of the magical treasures. If only there was—even one left.

MY REVIEW

The Firefly Warriors Club by Susan Count is a fun, informative, and suspenseful Middle Grade adventure book. Readers will learn a lot about fireflies, as well as farm life, mechanical workings, cowboy antics, and firefighting.

Davy (11) and Anderson (9) have a week’s stay at their Grandfather’s farm, which was supposed to be a quiet time for Davy to do some scientific research, and a week of games and horsing around for Anderson.  But the two boys come together to save the fireflies when a forest fire threatens their habitat, after experiencing an amazing (fanciful?) evening with a swarm of the bright creatures. Can they really read Morse Code??

They help neighbors and the Fire company as the fire rages, then, after the danger is past, tell them all how to help fireflies, including some tax incentives!!

The author has done some good research on this, and shares it in this adventure book. Kids will not realize they are learning so much.  Good job, Susan Count! I hope to see more of Davy and Anderson
