Kayla Jeffries, home bakery owner and HSP (Highly Sensitive Person), has arranged her life just so to avoid stressful overstimulation. The California oceanside community in which she lives proves the perfect venue for the quiet and peaceful existence she desires. She happily spends her time baking, walking along the beach, and spending time with her close friends.
But when Kayla discovers her elderly friend Trudy Dillingham has been strangled, she vows to do anything she must to help bring the killer to justice, including overcoming the stress and sensory overload involved in playing amateur detective. Using her HSP talents of attention to detail and ability to read other people’s emotions, Kayla eventually cracks the case, all the while juggling two cats and a dog, non-stop orders for the Christmas holidays, and a budding relationship with handsome restaurateur Jason Banks.

MY REVIEW – Five stars
In Carol E. Ayer’s Peppermint Cream Die cozy mystery, you will meet Kayla, who is a HSP (Hyper Sensitive Person). Yes, I’d never heard of them before either, but perhaps I can better understand some people now!
Kayla is also a home baker, living in a community on California’s coast, whose creations made my mouth water as I read. (Too bad the book doesn’t include any of her recipes – especially her Chocolate Cake which everyone raved about.) And, it’s that chocolate cake (not the Peppermint Pie) that helps her snag the love interest in the story. There is a mention of it at the end of the story as well, which nicely “ices” with sweetness a persistent problem Kayla had.
But on to the mystery. Only pages after we meet Kayla and her elderly friend, Trudy, the sweet senior citizen becomes a murder victim. The police are stymied, so Kayla determines to try her hand at investigating. The new sleuth confronts their neighbors with questions without so much as a twinge, until an elderly gent is murdered in the same way. Was it Kayla’s fault? The shadow of evil inches its way in like the storm clouds over the Pacific until Kayla herself is in dire danger. But by whom? And why?
The solution, and several steps along the way, are surprising to say the least! Wow!
And all the while our first-time sleuth is digging up answers, she is concocting her signature cakes, cookies, and pies. Her love interest – a restaurateur – divvies up some lip-smacking foods as well (like his clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl). I guarantee your mouth will be watering as you read this delicious, very cozy mystery. I look forward to the next book in this fun, tummy-growling, and interesting mystery series.
PS: Look for Flour and Sugar in the book too! They are so purrr-fect.
