Seaside Cove Bed & Breakfast owner Rick Atwood is again called on to assist his friend, Chief of Police Adam Cunningham, with a murder investigation. The case seems straightforward enough. Clive Crabbe, who has a quick temper and a strong jealous streak, was found hunched over the victim after the man made advances toward Clive’s ex-wife.
A murder investigation is the last thing Rick wants right now. The B&B is booked solid. The town is inundated with tourists and news reporters chasing stories about treasure thieves. And Rick’s wedding to Marquetta Weiss is just weeks away. As if that wasn’t enough, Rick’s eleven-year-old daughter Alex is not only itching to help the cops solve another murder, but she’s forming an unhealthy friendship with a B&B guest.
As the murder investigation progresses, Rick realizes Alex’s new friend could be at the center of everything. The worst part is that Alex may be the one person capable of cracking the case.

Terry Ambrose’s style of writing is as much a pleasure to read as his Seaside Cove Bread & Breakfast setting would be to visit. Right away, you get to know the B&B owner, Rick Atwood and his precocious eleven-year-old daughter, Alex. There is also a love interest – Marquetta – that softens the crime story with glimpses of tenderness as the soon-to-be wife and new mom.
The story is written in alternating chapters between dad and daughter which makes for built-in cliff hangers. You also get glimpses of the mystery, and the questioning of suspects from two points of view. Really fun.
But in this idyllic setting, there is dangerous quest taking place, a deadly hunt for the 400-year-old treasure that is on a sunken ship in the cove. It seems there are several greedy people after the treasure for themselves who won’t stop at murder to get it. And it’s up to Alex… er, I mean, Police chief Adam Cunningham with help from Rick, to find them.
I love Alex, who gives readers hints about what trouble she’s about to get into by writing in her journal. And while she does get herself into scary situations, she is also marvelous at solving mysteries. In Treasure Most Deadly, there are several suspects staying in the B&B who must be investigated. Alex weaves her way into their confidence, suggests traps to catch them, and discovers hidden clues just like a Nancy Drew (which the police chief calls her).
Reading Treasure Most Deadly by Terry Ambrose is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon or two. And I bet any “tween” or young teen girl would, like, totally! enjoy the book too.
It happened on a cruise ship…
If you were a fan of the old sitcom The Love Boat, you remember how each week new couples fell in love or reignited an old love. The same thing happened to me while my wife and I were celebrating our 40th anniversary. The year was 2019, and the ship was the MS Noordam. But the ‘new’ love affair wasn’t with another person, it was with stainless steel cookware.
The pork chop debacle
Kathy and I were married in 1979. One of our wedding presents was a Farberware electric stainless steel skillet. That pan was a favorite of ours for many years—it was beautiful, cooked nicely, and was easy to clean—until Kathy’s parents visited and we put our favorite pork chop recipe on the menu.
For the first time in over ten years, those pork chops stuck. Bad. Yes, those pork chops became the archenemy of our favorite skillet. Once we’d cleaned it up, we relegated the skillet to the ranks of Wedding Presents Unused.
Cruise ship kitchen
Thirty years after the pork chop debacle, I’d taken over the cooking after Kathy suffered a hand injury. Our nonstick cookware set was aging and so, out of a combination of interest and desire to kill a little time, I sat in on a cruise ship cooking demonstration during which the chef cooked chicken thighs on stainless steel. Not only was I reminded of how well stainless steel browned meats, but I learned two important things. First, you can’t rush the cooking process on stainless steel. And second, I discovered a mysterious process called deglazing.
The magic of patience and deglazing
Our America’s Test Kitchen chef showed us that all meats will stick when cooking on stainless steel. Like I had to be reminded of that, right? Cruise Cooking Epiphany #1 was that the meat will release itself from the pan once it’s fully browned. Well, rats. Why didn’t I know that thirty years ago? If we’d have just been patient, the pork chop debacle might have been the pork chop masterpiece.
And what’s this thing called deglazing? It’s simply the process of adding a little liquid to a hot pan. Cruise Cooking Epiphany #2 was that if we’d just added a half cup of liquid to the pan after we took out those nasty pork chops, the story might have had a happy ending.
The love affair comes full circle
For Christmas in 2019, I asked Santa for an All-Clad 12-inch stainless steel skillet. Everyone thought I was nuts. Who asks Santa for a pan? Right? Let’s just say I was so delighted with my gift that I asked for another All-Clad pan on my birthday. Recently, we converted all of our nonstick cookware to stainless steel. Last night, we even had scrambled eggs and pancakes, and I never want to go back to nonstick cookware.
