Limited time. A murderer hiding in plain sight. Can she crack the deadly puzzle without breaking her own heart?

‛Mama Rose’ Hardie just wants to make her ailing husband comfortable. So she puts aside her dedication to wildlife and community and whisks him off to a luxury lodge for a breathtaking getaway. But when a guest enters the bush and never returns, Rose is torn between remaining at her partner’s side and her fears for the woman’s plight.

Shocked when the missing person is found strangled to death, Rose struggles to balance her priorities when her husband takes a serious fall and ends up in the hospital. And with her estranged son demanding she stay by her husband’s bedside, the anxious investigator worries the killer may escape into the grassland…

Can Mama Rose solve the murder before time is cut short?

About Victoria Tait

Victoria Tait is the author of the enchanting Kenya Kanga Mystery series.  She’s drawn on 8 years of experience living in rural Kenya, with her family, to write vivid and evocative descriptions.  Her readers feel the heat, taste the dryness and smell the dust of Africa.  Her elderly amateur sleuth, “Mama Rose” Hardie is Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple reincarnated and living in Kenya.

Like all good military wives, Victoria follows the beat of the drum and currently lives in Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  She has two fast growing teenage boys and enjoys horse riding and mountain biking.

Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh! Wow! I just finished Victoria Tait’s, “Jackal & Hide, A Kenya Kanga Mystery” and I am bowled over. It’s so good!

It’s the fourth in the series, and I’ve read them all. With each book Tait gets better and better. This one is outstanding! And the scene I just read at almost the end of the book, is over-the-top! I had to put it down, close my eyes, and take a deep breath before continuing. Superb writing!

A note from the author at the beginning of the book is a challenge. She says she has laid out many clues before we learn a murder has been committed. She tells us to read carefully and see if we can work out who the victim/perpetrator will be, and how/why the crime is committed? (I had a few wrong guesses!)

As with all Tait’s books, an African animal is featured. In this case they’re jackals. You meet one in the prologue and three more later. Mama Rose, the older, English heroine in the book, cares for animals, helps in their conservation, wisely advises friends, and is a mastermind at solving murders.

She and her ailing husband Craig, enjoy watching a marathon in the Lewa Conservancy, never expecting a murder is afoot. When Craig has a bad fall, she leaves the excitement for the hospital. But it’s not long before she is called back. A woman is missing, and a body has been found.

Rose stretches her heart and her time between being at her husband’s bedside, and helping the authorities come up with the who, how and why. She’s sure she knows all the details of the murder, but can she find evidence to prove it in time? Torn between her responsibilities for her family and the cold-blooded criminals about to escape, she gets strength from her husband’s mouthed words. “Go. Do what you can.”

I loved this book. It touches your heart and punches you in the gut. When you read the last words, it’s just like crossing the finish line in a Marathon!
