The title – GUILT IS MIDNIGHT BLUE BY Josalyn McAllister – caught my interest right away. I know a woman who has a similar synesthesia, only she “tastes” colors. I’m fascinated with this condition, and the mystery in the book uses it in a unique way – to help solve crimes.
Hazel Dean, owner of the amazing “Books and Chocolate” shop (back to that in a minute), and wife of her town’s prosecutor, sees people’s emotions in colors. I was fascinated, when she declares a man who is jailed for murder as innocent – just because of the color that emanates from him (It’s NOT midnight blue.).
That book shop of hers is almost a fantasy place. As people arrive seeking either books, or a tasty baked sweet or hot chocolate, or even to join in the book club, Hazel is able to immediately see which book they should read – the book makes itself known to her. That’s what happened to a young man seeking refuge one night, and what led to a series of horrendous crimes.
I was caught up in the story right away, meeting Hazel’s family, (glimpsing her cooking talents – yes there are recipes at the end), and learning of her determination to free an innocent man despite the risks she has to take. Oh, my! I mean, a 40-something woman doing THAT??
You will totally enjoy this book, have your heart-strings pulled by the characters, and hold your breath in the suspense scenes.
